EPB Service Mode: Which Cars Need a Scan Tool for Rear Brakes

Some electronic parking brakes have a pedal-and-switch service mode, others need a scan tool. How to tell, with real procedures and verified tool coverage.

On a car with an electronic parking brake (EPB), each rear caliper usually has a small geared motor that screws the piston out to hold the car. Before you can fit thicker new pads, that motor has to be wound back electronically. This is what “EPB service mode” (also called maintenance mode) does.

Don’t force it. On motor-on-caliper systems the piston is driven by a geared motor, not free hydraulics. Levering it or using a wind-back tool against a powered caliper can strip the gears and ruin the caliper (servicereset.net, Evoque L538). Unplugging the motor doesn’t retract it either.

Two ways in: a built-in sequence or a scan tool

1. A built-in sequence (no scanner). Some vehicles let you enter service mode from the driver’s seat with a combination of ignition, accelerator and EPB switch. Published examples:

These sequences are model-specific. Don’t assume one brand’s sequence works on another, even inside the same family, and always check the factory service information for your exact vehicle.

2. A scan tool. If there’s no published sequence, or it won’t engage, you need a scanner that lists the EPB service function for your vehicle. The function names vary a lot by maker. Here’s how they appear in Autel’s official coverage list for the MK808S, which we checked on 2026-10-16:

Vehicle (year checked)Function name in the maker’s list
Ford F-150 / Explorer / Escape (2021)Electric Parking Brake (EPB) service tools; EPB initialization
Chevrolet Tahoe (2021), GMC Sierra (2019)Activate/Deactivate rear park brake service position; Parking brake calibration
Toyota RAV4 (2020), Tundra (2022), Corolla (2020)EPB full release (RAV4 also lists Replace brake pads)
Honda CR-V / Civic / Accord (2018 and newer)Brake Pad Maintenance Mode
Hyundai Elantra (2021), Tucson (2022)Brake Pad Change Mode
Nissan Rogue / Altima (2021)Start brake pad replacement / Finish brake pad replacement
Subaru Outback (2021)Electric Parking Brake (EPB) compulsion release mode

Seeing the function in a coverage list is the reliable test. “EPB” printed on a scanner’s box only tells you the menu exists (why that’s not enough).

Not every truck has an EPB

Plenty of popular vehicles still use a cable or drum-in-hat parking brake. Those don’t need EPB service mode at all. For example, Autel’s list for the 2020 Tacoma shows no EPB function, only “Replace brake pads (operating guide)”. If your vehicle has a hand lever or foot pedal parking brake, it’s almost certainly not an EPB.

After the job
