Battery Registration: Which Vehicles Need It After a New Battery

What battery registration and BMS reset do, which makes require a scan tool, and what happens if you skip it. Sourced from OEM and battery-maker guidance.

On older cars you swap the battery and drive off. On many newer ones, a battery management system (BMS) tracks the battery’s age, charge acceptance and state of charge. When you fit a new battery, you have to tell the system, or it keeps charging the new battery as if it were the worn-out one.

What registration actually does

The BMS, together with an electronic or intelligent battery sensor, monitors the battery over its life: number of starts, energy throughput and state of charge. It adapts charging and energy management as the battery ages (VARTA). Registration resets those learned values so charging matches a healthy new battery (Midtronics).

Which vehicles need it

VARTA lists OEMs that require active registration with a diagnostic device, including Alpina, Audi, BMW, Jaguar, Jeep, Land Rover, Mazda, Mini, Seat, Skoda and Volkswagen. Some, such as the VW group and BMW, also need a battery-specific code (VARTA). VARTA also notes that Ford offers a manual dashboard-button BMS reset on some models. Ford service information for other models, though, says to use a scan tool after a battery replacement.

Changing battery type? Going from flooded to AGM, or the reverse, means telling the car the new type as well as registering the replacement. Otherwise the charging profile is wrong for the chemistry (cheapobd2).

How the function is named in coverage lists

From the Autel MK808S coverage we’ve verified, the function goes by different names:

Vehicles on our siteFunction name in the maker’s list
Ford F-150, Explorer, Escape, Ranger, Bronco, Maverick, Expedition, EdgeBattery Monitoring System (BMS) reset
Chevy Silverado 1500, GMC Sierra 1500, Chevy EquinoxBattery sensor module learn
Toyota RAV4, Camry, Corolla, Tacoma, Tundra, Highlander, 4RunnerSwitch battery type (marked partial)
Nissan Altima, FrontierMain battery type configuration (marked partial)

“Switch battery type” and “battery type configuration” set the battery type. That’s related to registration but not the same thing, which is why we mark them partial.

After registration: let it sleep

Ford notes the body control module recalibrates state of charge during 8 hours of undisturbed sleep, with no doors opened, no keyless entry presses, and current draw under 300 mA (Ford BMS document). BMW guidance similarly says the vehicle should stand at least 3 hours before the state of charge is reliable (cheapobd2).
